About the concert

Rhythm and melancholy, gypsy virtuosity alongside the exciting French melodies performed by the mythical Hot Club de Norvège!

The gypsy swing band "Hot Club de Norvège" draws on the gypsy swing idea that was produced in Paris back in the 1930's by Stefan Grappelli and Django Reinhardt when they founded "Hot Club de France". The band, which has been touring the world for over forty years, played with Stephen Grappelli in the 1980s as the style re-emerged in the headlines.

Later in their careers, they played with all the big names of the style like Jimmy Rosenberg, Stochelo Rosenberg, and even with Nigel Kennedy. They even lead the "Django Festival" for gypsy music in Norway.

In the late 1920s and early 1930s Paris was a center for American musicians visiting Europe. Paris is beloved because Americans and especially black artists, who have suffered from the unbearable discrimination in America, come to Paris and feel at home - feel equal among others.

The sparks of jazz from America come with Sydney Bechet, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, and Duke Ellington. Along with them comes the American swing from the Cotton Club, from the Savoy ball Room, and kicks and dances and conquers Paris.

"Hot Club de France" is the band that would influence a style that would later be called "Gypsy Jazz" - which combined French chanson and American jazz.

The rhythm alongside the melancholy, the gypsy virtuosity alongside the moving French melodies. All of these were placed in the melting pot of the French swing of the 1930s.
